What Is An Earthquake?
An earthquake is an intense shaking of the earth’s surface caused by underground movement in the earth’s outermost layer.
If an earthquake hits, stay calm. If you’re indoors, stay inside. If you’re outside, stay away from power lines or anything that might fall. If you’re in a car, stop the car and stay inside until the earthquake stops.

Memphis ranks at the highest risk level for an earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Depending on the epicenter, an earthquake may break natural gas lines, causing fires and explosions, or burst water pipes, causing flooding. Turn off utilities that have broken lines, especially gas. Attach a wrench to your gas meter so it will be handy. To shut off the gas, turn the valve until it is perpendicular to the pipe.
