MLGW Warns Customers of Potential Green Dot Scam
March 14, 2018

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is again warning customers about a scam involving utility payments. Customers have reported receiving calls from representatives claiming to be MLGW. The caller requests a payment from the customer and threatens to disconnect services. The caller ID shows MLGW’s Customer Care Center phone number, 901-544-6549. But the call back number left on messages is 901-273-8004. Calls made to this number state that it is the “Business Contact Center.” It is not MLGW, customers should not call this number.

MLGW does not request payments over the phone. The culprits often use phone “spoofing” technology, which makes your caller ID display what appears to be MLGW’s number.

If you get such a call, MLGW and the Memphis Police urge you to do the following:

  • Hang up the phone.
  • Never give out personal financial information over the phone.
  • Call the MLGW Customer Care Center at 901-544-6549 if you have any concerns.
  • Report it to your local police station if you have been scammed.
  • Go to any of the five MLGW community business offices and speak with a credit counselor if you have problems paying your utility bill.

MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 421,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
