MLGW Statement on Meter Reading
September 5, 2014

As part of an ongoing investigation, Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division has terminated seven meter readers and indefinitely suspended another for falsification of MLGW records.

Falsification of MLGW records is neither allowed nor tolerated. The ongoing investigation, which began in May, revealed that false readings were being entered for unread meters. Recently-installed smart meters led to the detection of false readings. The investigation is still ongoing. Further disciplinary action is expected.

“Falsification of meter readings by MLGW employees will not be tolerated,” said Jerry R. Collins Jr., MLGW president and chief executive officer.

Most of the residential and commercial accounts that have been affected by the erroneous data have already been corrected. Adjustments included either a credit or back-bill to those affected. Credits were applied in overbilled cases; customers were back-billed for services used but previously unbilled in accordance with state and federal law and MLGW policy. Affected customers could qualify for payment arrangements that extend re-payment over several months.

Each month, more than one million meters are physically read. MLGW is committed to accuracy and professionalism in meter reading. Additional measures to both prevent and detect falsification of meter readings are being put in place, though no system is perfect.
