“Rush hour storm” restoration complete
July 25, 2023
Utility restores 216,000 customers following severe storms

Memphis Light, Gas and Water has officially stood down the Electric Crisis Response team as of 2 p.m. today. The severe storms on Tuesday, July 18 (dubbed the Rush hour storm because it hit at approximately 6 p.m.) and Friday, July 21 impacted 216,000 customers.

As of today, there has been a full storm restoration to customers who could take power. Customers who continue to experience storm related hardships, should call 211 to be connected to an agency who can provide support.

We appreciate our MLGW and contracted crews who labored in tough conditions to make sure that our communities recovered expeditiously. There were 98 repair crews, 89 tree trimming crews, 23 troubleshooters and 34 damage assessment teams identifying damage and repairing the system. Along with hundreds of logistics, administrative, safety and system operations personnel supporting the effort.

While storm recovery has ended, the work continues. MLGW will invest $227 million in tree trimming and infrastructure updates like the installation of new transformers, modernized equipment and having fewer customers on a fuse tap are planned to lessen the impact of future storms.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving the residents of Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee since 1939.
