MLGW will shut down two steel gas pipelines near its facility in the Westwood Community on Thursday, April 17. Customers in the Brooks/Gill roads area will likely smell mercaptan during that process.
The work will start around 8 a.m. and could continue until 5 p.m. or until the gas is purged from both pipelines.
The public in the surrounding area may smell mercaptan in the air. Mercaptan is the chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell so it can be easily detected.
This work is part of the Weaver-Gill Project, a $30 million modernization initiative to improve the pipeline distribution of natural gas in South Memphis.
