MLGW selects Nokia to deploy 5G network for grid modernization initiative
July 14, 2025

The private network will be a first for a municipal utility in the U.S.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division reached another pivotal moment in its Renewal/Replacement of Infrastructure (r2I) Initiative, selecting Nokia to deploy a comprehensive private 5G wireless network across Memphis and Shelby County. When the two-phase project is complete, MLGW will be the first municipal utility in the United States with a full-scale stand-alone 5G private wireless network that will enable real-time communication and automation across the utility’s three divisions.

“The 5G Network Deployment is a foundational aspect of MLGW’s Grid Modernization Initiative,” said Doug McGowen, president and chief executive officer of MLGW. “We will be able to meet the requirements for a modern electric grid. We will have fast and reliable communication for grid devices; increased reliability during storms or cyber events that will help us restore power even faster after outages. This enables more automation and smart control operations and supports future technology like electric vehicles and battery storage.”

Jeff Pittman, Head of Enterprise North America, Mobile Networks, added, “This collaboration marks a major milestone in advancing MLGW’s power grid modernization and their commitment to building a smarter, more resilient, and future-ready utility infrastructure for the community. It also underscores Nokia’s leadership in delivering end-to-end private wireless networks that empower utilities to accelerate their digital transformation and enhance service reliability for their customers.”

Phase 1 focuses on establishing foundational coverage for core operations; it’s expected to achieve 93 percent coverage of the county. Phase 2 will enhance coverage, improve network resiliency, and support grid automation, emerging applications and future use cases.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving the residents of Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee since 1939. MLGW consistently provides customers with rates that are amongst the lowest in the nation and stewards a water supply from artesian wells that is minimally treated. Actively engaged in promoting the prosperity of Memphis and Shelby County, MLGW supports the seven local chambers in its service area and makes doing business with local, minority- and women-owned business a priority. Deeply rooted in the community, its employees generously donate time and money in support of bettering the Greater Memphis area.
