MLGW Requests Voluntary Energy Conservation in Response to High Demand Across the TVA Region
June 24, 2025

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is encouraging all customers to voluntarily reduce electricity usage today and into this evening, as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has activated Emergency Load Curtailment Program (ELCP) Step 10 and Step 20.

These measures are being taken across the entire TVA region due to extremely high temperatures and increased electricity demand. When energy use across the region spikes, TVA initiates these steps to ease pressure on the grid and maintain stable, reliable power for all customers.

This is not unique to Memphis—local power companies across the TVA system are responding to the same conditions. MLGW is committed to being transparent with customers about what’s happening and what actions we’re taking. We are not experiencing outages now, and no service interruptions are planned. We aim to help reduce strain on the grid so that interruptions can be avoided altogether.

How you can help today:

· Turn off unnecessary lights and electronics

· Raise your thermostat a few degrees, if health allows

· Wait until later tonight to run dishwashers, washing machines or dryers

· Limit electric vehicle charging to off-peak hours if possible

Even small changes in energy use across thousands of households and businesses can have a significant impact.

We appreciate everyone’s efforts and cooperation during this period of high demand.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving the residents of Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee since 1939. MLGW consistently provides customers with rates that are amongst the lowest in the nation and stewards a water supply from artesian wells that is minimally treated. Actively engaged in promoting the prosperity of Memphis and Shelby County, MLGW supports the seven local chambers in its service area and makes doing business with local, minority- and women-owned business a priority. Deeply rooted in the community, its employees generously donate time and money in support of bettering the Greater Memphis area.
