The 2013 Kindergarten – Senior High Student Poster Contest “Saving Energy”
September 18, 2013


Memphis Light, Gas and Water’s Energy Awareness Poster Contest is designed to give all students residing within the MLGW service areas of Shelby County the opportunity to learn about saving energy during October, Energy Awareness Month and afterwards to share their ideas by creating poster entries. The students’ artwork will help to increase awareness about the need to save energy which will in turn help people save money on their utility bills while preserving our country’s natural resources.

 
General Rules:
  • All children who are enrolled students in grades K-12 attending ANY school within Shelby County are eligible to enter the contest.
     
  • Each entry must be the original work of the student submitting the artwork. Use of copyrighted material without permission automatically disqualifies the entry.
     
  • Photographs and computer-generated artwork will not be accepted.
     
  • Art teachers of grades 2-5 are encouraged to utilize the Energy IQ Traveling Learning Lab in conjunction with the poster contest. Contact the Children’s Museum of Memphis, (901) 458-2678 to borrow for instructors.
     
  • Please attach the official Artwork Entry and Release Form securely to the back of the artwork with tape along all sides of the page.
     
Specific Art Form Rules:
  • The work must be mounted on a sturdy mat board, foam board, cardboard, or poster board that is suitable for display. Poster sizes: minimum size 8” x 11”; maximum 11” x 17”.  These sizes include the poster on the mounted board.
     
  • Framed or laminated entries will NOT be accepted.

Submission Process:
  • Shelby County Schools
All student contestants should submit their artwork to the art teacher at their school who will then submit the entry to Gregg Coats, coatsga@scsk12.net Visual Arts and Theatre Coordinator, at the Teaching and Learning Academy, 2485 Union Annex, 38112, by the 4 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2013 deadline. Gregg Coats will submit all student entries to an MLGW representative.
 
  • Home Schools, Parochial Schools, Private Schools, Charter Schools, Montessori and Independent Schools
All K-12 students attending schools other than Shelby County Schools but within Shelby County are eligible to participate and enter the contest. Students/teachers may submit their entries to Felicia Peat,  felicia.peat@cmom.com, at the Children’s’ Museum of Memphis, 2525 Central Avenue 38104, no later than the  4 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2013, deadline.  Felicia Peat will submit all entries to an MLGW representative.
 

Judging and Awards:
  • MLGW will oversee the judging of the artwork with non-employee judges.
     
  • The entries will be judged on their ability to clearly and creatively communicate the theme “saving energy.”
     
  • Entries will be judged in three categories – elementary school (grades K-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12).
     
  • Each student winner (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12) will receive a $125 award.
     
  • Each winner’s teacher will receive a $125 gift certificate to the Art Center. Home schooled students will need validation of instructor from their parent/instructor.
     
  • All entries will become the property of MLGW and may be used for promotional purposes.
