Champion of renewable energy dies
May 13, 2020
Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division mourns the loss of energy advisor and public utilities leader, S. David Freeman. Freeman died Tuesday; he was 94 years old.

Freeman was a firm believer in public power and headed some of the country’s largest public utility companies including the New York Power Authority, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).

Often called “the green cowboy” for his support and promotion of renewable energy and energy conservation, Freeman routinely engaged with MLGW sharing his thoughts on helping customers use energy more efficiently.

“MLGW is saddened to hear about the passing of a true legend in the energy industry,” said Division President and CEO, J.T. Young. “The impacts of Mr. Freeman’s efforts will live on throughout the Valley and across the nation. His concerns were authentic and his passion evident.”

MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 429,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
