MLGW News Release

MLGW recognizes both Customer Service Week and Public Power Week with a Day of Service
October 8, 2019
Sometimes, our neediest customers are unable to do minor home repairs that could lower their utility bills. To help these customers, MLGW employees will dedicate their time on Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Binghampton area to help with caulking and weatherstripping windows and doors, delivering energy kits door-to-door, replacing HVAC filters and light bulbs, trimming hedges and trash pick up.

This is the second year that MLGW employees have celebrated Customer Service with a Day of Service during Public Power Week. Public power utilities across the U.S. celebrate Public Power Week the first full week of October every year.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is among the 2,011 communityowned utility companies and a proud member of the American Public Power Association. Collectively, the APPA reports that its public power members supply electricity to 49 million people in 49 states and five U.S. territories. In the U.S., that means public power serves one in seven electricity customers.

In addition, public power costs less. On average, a public power residential customer pays 11.5 cents per kilowatt hour compared to an investor-owned residential customer who pays 13.2 cents per kilowatt hour. At MLGW, our residential customers pay 9.7 cents per kilowatt hour. We would never be where we are today without our valued customers.

MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 429,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
