MLGW, Exxon On The Run, and TVA team up for Community Conservation Day
October 7, 2008
(October 7, 2008) - With costs rising in virtually all sectors of the energy market, a new push is on to ensure that customers are using energy wisely and getting the most for their energy dollar. To help customers understand the best ways to use energy in their daily lives, MLGW, Exxon On the Run stores, and TVA are teaming up to bring Community Conservation Day to Memphis and Shelby County. The October 10 event is aimed not only at raising awareness of wise energy usage, but also for customers to find ways to curb their energy usage and reduce their carbon footprint.

On October 10, MLGW employees will be at each of the 38 Exxon On the Run stores in Shelby County with energy saving giveaways including compact fluorescent light bulbs and outlet insulating gaskets. Energy saving brochures will also be available. MLGW employees also answer questions regarding energy conservation.

"With TVA's recent electric rate increase, it is becoming even more important for all of us to practice energy conservation in our homes," said MLGW President and CEO Jerry Collins Jr. "There are a lot of little things that we can do each day that together add up to big savings. We want to encourage our customers how to think about energy conservation."

Tennesseans use more electricity than any other state except for Alabama. While MLGW's electric rates are comparatively low, large amounts of usage can cause bills to be unnecessarily high.

As part of the day, FM-100 and WDIA will be broadcasting live from two Exxon On the Run locations. FM-100 will be at Germantown Road and Trinity and WDIA will be at Third and Horn Lake from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with additional giveaways and free food for customers who stop by to learn how to save energy.

Every day at Exxon On the Run locations, MLGW customers can pay their bill using E-Wiz kiosks operated by TIO Networks. The kiosks offer the utility’s 420,000 customers the convenience of real-time bill payment with cash, 24-hours-a-day, at self-serve automated machines for a small convenience fee, which MLGW does not receive.

MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 420,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
