About MLGW : SMALLEST USER

MLGW is watching for the "Smallest User"

MLGW is looking to crown the Midtown neighborhood that uses the least amount of energy during 2010. The utility, along with the University of Memphis and the Community Foundation, is sponsoring an energy conservation competition between the Cooper-Young and Evergreen neighborhoods. The one that saves the most energy in 2010 will be honored with MLGW’s first "Smallest User" award.

Throughout the neighborhoods customers are caulking, re-programming thermostats, sealing cracks, adding insulation and finding other ways to conserve energy and save money. This year’s winning neighborhood will receive a trophy and a small cash prize.

"We thought this would be an innovative, fun, creative way to get the two neighborhoods together to duke it out," said Jerry Collins, MLGW President and CEO. "It puts a new twist on saving money by reducing your energy costs, and as an added bonus, gives the winning community a little bit of bragging rights."

MLGW, students and faculty in the journalism department at the University of Memphis and neighborhood leaders from both the Cooper-Young Development Corporation and the Evergreen Historic District Association are talking about energy conservation and giving contest participants information on how to make their homes and lifestyles more energy efficient. Customers are also encouraged to take advantage of several free or low cost MLGW programs that help customers lower their energy costs.

"Just in the first few months of the year, we have already seen a drop in bills in the Evergreen Neighborhood, however Cooper-Young is not very far behind and has plenty of time to make up the difference," Collins added. “We hope this will become an annual competition that will spread beyond Midtown and across our entire service territory.”

Updates on the competition can be found each month on Action News 5. Customers can also cheer on their favorite team at www.mlgw.com/smallestuser.
